Question about Quicktime videos saved to disk

I have been using QuickTime for my videos. With this warning, I have now downloaded VLC Media Player and made it my default so any future videos will be saved to this player. Question......I have a lot of videos saved to disk and they are in Quick Time. If I delete Quick Time from my computer will these saved videos automatically open using the VLC Player or do I have to have QuickTime to open them?
